Answer: the NDP.

Across Canada, comparing budgets brought in by governments of all political stripes, it is NDP governments who have brought in the most balanced budgets during their years in power.

NDP governments brought in balanced budgets more than half the time they were in office. Conservative governments ran deficits more than half the time they were in power.

In Nova Scotia, the NDP has always insisted on two things before it would support a budget: it must be balanced, and it must make life better for families. The NDP has voted against every budget that failed to meet these conditions.

Balanced budgets are essential to providing the kinds of public services families count on: like health care that’s there when you need it; quality education; dignified care for seniors; and safe roads.

In the last two years, Rodney MacDonald’s Conservative government has spent $600 million on expenditures that weren’t approved in the budget. They purchased ATVs for children, leased expensive vehicles for cabinet ministers’ personal use and gave double-digit raises to the Premier’s senior political staff.
